The first Medical School in the southern state of Kerala started functioning in 1951. The Kerala model of health care, globally acclaimed for cost-effectiveness, is attributable to the alumni of this institution. The Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital, offering comprehensive health care for women and children was added in 1952.
